International Award:

Eduardo Galeano - The famed and honored novelist considered an inspirational force behind the reclaiming of natural resources by the people of Latin America.

Community Builder:

Malik Rahim - A veteran community organizer working with other Hurricane Katrina survivors to turn New Orleans into a showplace of justice, equality, and environmental and social progress.

2005

Domestic Award:

Center for Constitutional Rights - A legal organization charged with defending our constitutional rights and civil liberties.

International Award:

Dr. Paul Farmer - A doctor and activist setting a new standard for rural healthcare in impoverished regions while proving that infectious diseases can be treated and eliminated.

Young Leader:

Camilo Mejia – The first Iraq soldier to declare conscientious objector status and refuse to return for another term in Iraq.

2004

Domestic Award:

Harry Belafonte - The world-renowned musician and Goodwill Ambassador who is also a committed activist in the civil rights and Fair Trade movements.

International Award:

Via Campesina - An organization dedicated to unifying small farmers movements around the world and fighting for land reform and against genetically modified seeds.

Woman of Peace:

Diane Wilson – The Texas shrimper who founded unReasonable Women to fight for peace and environmental justice.

2003

Domestic Award:

Friar Louis Vitale, OFM – A Franciscan priest with a long track record of fighting for justice, peace and the closure of the School of the Americas.

International Award:

Dr. Asmi Bishara - A member of the Knesset who fights for equal rights for all people in Israel.

Code Pink Women of Peace:

Kathy Kelly – The founder of Voices in the Wilderness, which seeks to end the Iraq embargo and save Iraqi children.

Arundhati Roy – The author and outspoken peace activist from India.

Barbara Lee – The courageous congresswoman who voted against the war in Afghanistan.

Bianca Jagger – A long-time peace activist who travels widely to shine a light on unjust conditions.

2002

Domestic Award:

Claudia Smith - The founder of the California Rural Legal Assistance Foundation and a tireless advocate for immigrants at the border between the US and Mexico

International Award:

Digna Ochoa y Placido - The slain human rights attorney whose life was placed in jeopardy because of her work defending peasant farmers in Mexico.

2001

Domestic Award:

Michael Franti - The hip-hop musician and outspoken advocate for victims of racism, inhumane prison conditions and police brutality.

International Award:

Mynor Melgar - The lead investigator and attorney in the case of slain Guatemalan Archbishop Gerardi.
